After an obligatory prologu in which its detective hero suffers a tragic professional setback, Along Came a Spider sets about its business of luring the viewer into its nefarious plot, relying on the magician’s techniqu of misdirection to reveal a double-whammy surprise. The clever, late-coming plot twist is a bit too mechanical but effectively unexpected, making this a satisfying prequl to the hit thriller Kiss the Girls–based on the first of James Patterson’s Alex Cross detective novels–and a welcomed addition to a promising movie franchise. It’s no better or worse than a good vintage episode of Peter Falk’s Columbo, adhering closely to the mystery-thriller’s time-honored traditions, but with Morgan Freeman settling comfortably into his role as seasoned sleuth Alex Cross, familiar formula is given fresh vitality.
When a senator’s daughter is kidnapped from her high-security private school, the kidnapper (nicely played by the underrated Michael Wincott) draws Cross into the case, knowing that the psychologist-detective’s involvement will bring high-profile publicity. Cross partners with the Secret Service agent (Monica Potter) who botched her assignment, but wait… the movie’s got a rabbit in its hat… and that rabbit has an ace up its sleeve… and director Lee Tamahori (who brought similar intensity to The Edge) handles the sleight-of-hand with slick precision, dispensing just enough information to keep the viewer off guard without resorting to cheap manipulation. Don’t look for much depth of character here, but Along Came a Spider is well served by everyone involved. It’s the movie equivalent of a bestseller you’d impulsively buy at the grocery-store checkout, and on those terms it succeeds. –Jeff Shannon

Inspired by a famous 1971 psychological experiment, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s German-language movie The Experiment finds a group of 20 volunteers randomly divided into 12 prisoners and eight guards and asked to play out their roles for a fortnight while scientists study their reactions. A conflict arises between undercover reporter Fahd (Moritz Bleibtreu), a con with a hidden agenda, and the apparently mild-mannered Berus (Justus von Dohnanyi), a guard with a megalomaniac streak. The film begins as a psychological drama as ordinary people settle into the game, with joking displays of resistance by the “prisoners” greeted with increasing brutality from the “guards,” but detours into suspense and horror as Fahd, who needs the experiment to get out of hand in order to make his story more saleable, deliberately ratchets up the tension between the factions only to see the situation spiral nightmarishly out of control as various test subjects in both camps edge closer to snapping.
With a terrific display of ensemble acting and unforced use of the popular claustrophobic semi-documentary look, Hirschbiegel’s movie takes its time to get underway, with apparently irrelevant cutaways to Fahd’s outside girlfriend (Maren Eggert), but works up to a powerful second half that delivers a sustained symphony of psychological and physical anguish. –Kim Newman

An inevitable idea: a working man (Michael Keaton) who can’t meet all his professional and family responsibilities has himself cloned. It works so well having one copy of himself to take charge of matters at the office that he makes another copy who takes care of the home front. Pretty soon, different aspects of Keaton’s personality are emphasized in the different clones: the laborer becomes a macho creep and the domestic god becomes rather feminine. A third clone, struck from the duplicates instead of the original, becomes like a photocopy of a photocopy: inferior. This timely comedy should be better than it is, but special-effects requirements are so labor-intensive that most scenes feel stiff and leaden. Keaton is good in all four parts, and in certain gee-whiz effects scenes, where he even high-fives himself, he pulls off a minor miracle or two. (Of course, a kid did the same thing in Disney’s 1998 remake of The Parent Trap.) The DVD release includes optional widescreen and standard formats and optional French and Spanish soundtracks. –Tom Keogh

Thicker waistlines and thinner dialogu don’t stop I Spy Returns from being an enjoyable reunion for the stars of the hip ’60s TV series. From 1965 to 1968, Bill Cosby and Robert Culp were the ultimate “salt and pepper” duo, playing super-spies Scott and Robinson (respectively) in a show that combined Mission: Impossible intrigu with witty banter and effortless biracial chemistry (at a time when such pairings were still considered experimental). A quarter-century later, Culp was still delightfully acerbic, Cosby had become a TV icon, and I Spy Returns gave them a happy excuse to wreak havoc in Vienna, where Robinson’s son (George Newbern) and Scott’s daughter (Salli Richardson) are freshly minted spies subjected to unwanted fatherly meddling. It’s TV fluff from start to finish, but Cosby and Culp are still cool together, even when they’re buck-naked captives of a sniveling British mercenary. It ain’t pretty, but it’s sure to get a laugh. –Jeff Shannon
